September 5, 2007
On September 5, 2002, we launched MasturbateForPeace.com. Five years later, what can we say? We're very proud of this site. We doubt if it's done a damn thing to foster peace in the world. Maybe we've even hurt "the cause" on some level. But at least it's provided some comic release to those of us who need some kind of outlet for our anger and frustration. The site began as little more than an angry joke. By that time, it was clear that war was inevitable, that no amount of honest debate or protesting could stop it. The decision had been made (see Cheney's speech of August 22). So our suggestion to the world? You're going to whack off anyway, why not do it for peace. It took about 20 minutes to launch. We stole the site design from Peace Action, including the graphics (which we've since redesigned) and put up a few paragraphs of text. The reaction was instantaneous and intense. Word of the site spread like wildfire across blogs and link sites (see fark.com from Sept 12). Visitors submitted their petitions for peace, bumper stickers, and poetry. We posted the best submissions. This user-generated content formed the core of the site; much of it is very funny, some profound. Over the years we've built on that. The slogans on Posters for Peace were all user-submitted, as were many of the pictures and graphics on the site. We've also produced our theme song "I Cum in Peace", as well as some Christmas carols, Easter mosaics, and body art. Our message, whatever that may be, is no less relevant today than it was five years ago. So we'll keep plugging along. |
